Sama rice is barnyard millet grain which is one of the popular fasting recipes for Navratri, Ekadashi, Mahashivratri, Jaya Parvati Vrat, and Janmashtami. This recipe is healthy and resembles a taste similar to rice acting as a great alternative to fulfill your rice cravings. It has a texture like that of semolina (Rava) broken wheat (Daliya), or even couscous.

Loaded with high fiber and rich in iron and potassium, this recipe gives you a boost of energy during your fasts. It is much smaller compared to rice grains. Samvat rice, Samak chawal, and Moriyo rice are the other names. This recipe is an easy and quick vrat recipe and can be prepared with just a few ingredients in 10 minutes.

Sama Rice | Samo Rice | Vrat Recipes | Samak Rice

We, Indians are very foodies and during fast also we ensure that a proper and good meal is enjoyed. There are so many recipes that we can make during fasting, but today in our kitchen we are going to share a quick vrat recipe called Sama Rice Khichdi.
During the full month of Sharvan, Navrati, or Monday fasting, this fasting recipe is ideal. Gujaratis call this food "farali" and on all 9 days of Navrati, they eat these Navratri special farali recipes.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Millet / Sama
  • 2 tbsp Ghee
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 2 Green Chilies chopped
  • ½ inch Ginger chopped
  • few Curry Leaves 
  • 1 Potato finely chopped
  • Rock salt or Sendha Namak as per taste
  • 2 cup Water
  • Fresh Coriander some

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl add millet or sama rice. Wash the rice with water twice or thrice. Finally, add enough water and soak for 30 minutes
  • Take a non-stick pot or a Kadai and add ghee. once the ghee is hot add cumin seeds, and saute it for a minute
  • Then add green chilies, ginger, a few curry leaves, and saute it for 1 minute
  • Add potatoes. Mix it well and cook for 2 to 3 minutes
  • Now add soaked millet or sama rice and mix it well
  • Add 2 cups of water, sendha namak or rock salt, and mix it well again
  • Allow the water to come to a boil
  • After the first boil cover with the lid and cook for 7 to 10 minutes on a medium flame
  • After 7 to 10 minutes, remove the lid and mix it well
  • Remove the pot from the gas and place a Tawa over it
  • Now place the sama rice pot over the tawa. In this way all the remaining moisture left in the sama or millet rice will be absorbed and the rice will not burn from the bottom of the pan.
  • Add coriander leaves and mix them well
  • Now cover with a lid and let it simmer for 2 minutes
  • The millet or the sama rice is ready
  • Serve it with aloo ki sabji or curd
