All you need to ensure is to soak the sabut moong for atleast 30 minutes before preparing the dish. But even if you don’t have time, you can give an additional two to three whistles, and a delicious creamy lentil soup will be ready.

How To Make Sabut Moong Dal, Green Gram Curry at Home
Ingredients
- ¾ cup Green Gram / Moong
- 2 tbsp Oil
- ½ tsp Cumin Seeds
- 1 Bay Leaf
- small piece Cinnamon Stick
- 1 Onion
- 2 Garlic cloves
- 2 Tomato
- ¼ tsp Turmeric Powder
- ¾ tbsp Coriander Powder
- ½ tbsp Red Chilli Powder
- ¼ tsp Kitchen King Masala
- 1¾ cups Water
- ¼ tsp Asafoetida
- 2 green chili, ½ inch ginger, fresh coriander
- Salt as per taste
- 1 tbsp Ghee
- 2 Dry Red Chili
Instructions
- Take ¾ cup of whole green gram (Moong) in a bowl. Wash and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
- Add 2 tbsp of oil to a pressure cooker and let the oil heat up. Add ½ tsp of cumin seeds, one bay leaf, and half a cinnamon stick. Saute it for a few seconds.
- Add one chopped onion and cook until golden in color.
- The onion has turned golden in color.
- Add two cloves of chopped garlic and saute for a few seconds.
- Add two chopped tomatoes and a little salt and cook on a low to medium flame until they turn soft and mushy.
- Take two green chilies, ½ inch ginger, and some fresh coriander leaves and grind it into a paste.
- The tomatoes have turned soft and mushy.
- Add the ground green masala paste, ¼ tsp of asafoetida, ¼ tsp of turmeric powder, ¾ tbsp of coriander powder, ½ tbsp of red chili powder. Saute it well.
- Add soaked whole green gram (moong) and salt as per taste. Mix it well.
- Add 1¾ cups of water and mix all the ingredients well.
- Add ¼ tsp of Kitchen King masala and some fresh coriander leaves. Mix all the ingredients well and cover the pressure cooker with the lid.
- Cook on a medium flame until four whistles. Once the pressure is released naturally, open the pressure cooker.
- Mix all the ingredients well. Take green gram and mash it gently with your finger to ensure it is soft and cooked well.
- Add some water and adjust the consistency as required.
- Mix well and cover it with a lid. Simmer on a low flame for one minute.
- After a minute, switch off the gas flame. Transfer the curry to a serving bowl and garnish it with some coriander.
- Add one tbsp of ghee in a small pan. Once the ghee is hot, add two dry red chilies and saute them for a few seconds.
- Spread the hot ghee tempering (tadka) over the green gram curry and serve hot.
- Enjoy the green gram masala lentil with rice, chapati, or paratha.
